A Transformative Solution to the Challenge of Urban Expansion in Maputo
The model is simple: substitute a family’s ramshackle, one story home with various well designed two to three story homes on the same plot of land.
That family is given, for a nominal fee, a brand new home, and the others are put on the market to finance the operation.
We began with a demonstration phase where we transformed 8 plots of land in Polana Caniço A, an area less than 3 km from the city center, Casa Minha enlisted 8 families to participate in the pilot that adheres to six core 6 principles: non displacement, affordable quality, innovative financing, incremental architecture, planned growth and community involvement.
After 3 years we are now transitioning from a start-up to the scaling phase of the business.
In 2019 Casa Minha finalized its first 14 houses representing a sample of different architectural models the project proposes to residents, home buyers and investors. We also improved access to both pedestrians and cars and we are now literally 150 m walk from Maputo's main avenue Julius Nyerere.
We are currently building another 7 houses to be finalised in May 2020 and planning our Phase IV with a target of additional 12-15 houses to be build starting in May-June 2020.
